This week was a unique time for our services. We took some time at the close of service going "Retro" with an old fashioned altar call coming forward response. Man it was great!
Back in the day at Grace Church, we used to do "altar calls" at the end of every service. We'd pull out the standard hymns "Just as I Am", "Have Thine Own Way", "Trust and Obey" and something else that I can't remember. After we reevaluated how effective this was in reaching unchurched people, we came to the conclusion that it was time to bury the old fashioned altar call. It's been over 3 to 4 years since we've done one. Until today.
Tim talked today about disappointment in God, disappointment in ourselves and downright nasty depression. Psalm 142 was the key passage for the message. You could hear a pin drop during service as many Christians were faced with the mirror today. And many of them came forward at the close to pray and deal with their struggles and sin. There's just something about creating memorable ways that people can respond to God's calling.
I am convinced after seeing how many people came forward that this is still an effective way to reach people and inspire them to live a life fully consecrated to Christ.
