I had a physical the other day. It was the first since about August of 2004. Lately I've discovered that my body does not seem to handle things the way it used to. So I've decided it's now time to make the yearly physical a yearly physical instead of the tri-yearly physical every three years.
While the body is needing a yearly check up, so too does the mind and heart. Just as I'm prone to think I don't need a yearly physical...I'm probably even more stubborn about the need to disconnect from ministry and the busyness of life. Mark Driscoll has been posting a "Death by Ministry" series. His recent post has some pretty shocking stats about the life of many pastors in churches across America. Here's an excerpt:
- Fifteen hundred pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout, or contention in their churches.
- Fifty percent of pastors' marriages will end in divorce.
- Eighty percent of pastors and eighty-four percent of their spouses feel unqualified and discouraged in their role as pastors.
- Almost forty percent polled said they have had an extra-marital affair since beginning their ministry.
- Eighty percent of pastors' spouses feel their spouse is overworked.
